The largest global reinsurer, Munich Re Group from Germany, recently released a report stating that the rapid development of technologies such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing is leading to a continuous increase in global cyber risks.
The report points out that in recent times, the number of global cyber attacks has surged, particularly with the threat of ransomware becoming increasingly prominent. Just last year, the number of attacks on global software supply chains reached twice the total of the past three years combined. Data platform Statista estimates that the annual global losses from cybercrime will rise from $8.15 trillion in 2023 to $13.8 trillion in 2028.
Regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on cybersecurity, experts from Munich Re Group predict that cyber attacks will "increasingly trend towards automation and personalization," with the cost of large-scale dissemination using various languages decreasing and speed increasing. For example, attackers may use AI-driven phishing emails and calls for scams.
Cyber insurance has become an essential component of cyber risk management. The report indicates that the global cyber insurance market has nearly doubled in size over the past five years, reaching $14 billion in 2023, and is projected to reach approximately $29 billion by 2027.
The report also highlights the positive aspect that artificial intelligence will further enhance the capabilities of network defense personnel. Artificial intelligence and related technologies can be used to strengthen detection and response capabilities, and to improve tracking and identification of cyber attacks by mapping adversaries' techniques, tactics, and procedures.
